Although the current trend of the gaming industry is to make games more violent and/or realistic, some producers are still bold enough to take a risk and release titles which try to remind us of our childhood. The console version of Spiderman 2, as well as City of Heroes or Freedom Force, has enjoyed considerable success. Unlike Spiderman or other comic book based games, Irrational Games' Freedom Force wasn't based on a particular license, so the producers had the freedom to create their own universe, with its own history and colorful characters. Released in 2002, Freedom Force pleasantly surprised the critics and gamers alike with its original mix of strategy and role-playing elements, its comic-book style graphic with vivid colors, memorable characters and sheer fun factor. Three years have passed since then and Irrational Games decided that it's time for a sequel.

The story of the original Freedom Force was very simple and straight-forward. Lord Dominion, ruler over a very powerful extra-terrestrial race, had managed to conquer the entire Universe, save for one planet: Earth. And like every self-esteeming ego-maniacal bad-guy, instead of conquering us the old fashion way, he decided to give the humans Energy-X, which is capable of granting any normal being extraordinary powers. However, one benevolent alien, called Mentor, managed to steal a substantial quantity of Energy-X, with the intention of using it to help humankind. But his ship was pursued and shot down, and the canisters of Energy-X fell to Earth, imbuing both good and bad guys (or girls) alike with superhuman powers. Those who decided to protect the Patriot City metropolis from this new born evil organized themselves under the leadership of Mentor and formed Freedom Force.
Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich (FFvt3R) picks off right where the original ended and continues the adventures of the four main heroes: Mentor, Minuteman, The Alchemiss and El Diablo. Apparently, our freedom fighters were so successful in their crime fighting endeavors, that at the start of the game, the Freedom Force is disbanded. But since nothing lasts forever, their archenemy, Nuclear Winter, with the help of the sorceress Red Oktober, manages to escape from the high level security prison he was thrown in and now plans to launch a devastating nuclear attack against the United States. But this is just the tip of the iceberg, since later on, out heroes will have to travel back in time to try and stop the Nazis from winning World War 2 with the aid of Energy-X.
