Although in the early days of the PC multiplayer was a vague notion, today it's almost inconceivable to create a title without it, because now it can dictate whether a particular game becomes a worldwide success or not, Counter Strike being the most eloquent example. And although CS is still the king of multiplayer games, there have been some tough pretenders to its crown, the most successful being Battlefield 1942 and Unreal Tournament 2004. Nevertheless, this year will se the launch of two more games which will take their shot at the multiplayer title: the first one is Tribes: Vengeance, which should be available shortly, while the second one, Star Wars Battlefront, is already available in shops and will be the subject of this review.

For obvious reasons, I won't bother telling you yet again what Star Wars is and what impact it had on the gaming community, since I don't believe that there is someone who hasn't even remotely heard of one of George Lucas' films. If there is, I would first like to welcome you to the planet Earth and hope that your stay will be as pleasant as possible. For the same reasons I won't re-mention the fact that the Star Wars license has had it's share of both good and bad games, whether they were for consoles or the PC. This is why the announcement of yet another Star Wars title, developed by Pandemic Studious (the makers of the unjustly under-rated Battlezone 2) was received with a little bit of skepticism, especially when it was learned that this new title wanted to give players the chance to play all the major battles from the two trilogies as they wanted, in massive multiplayer matches. Fortunately, Pandemic have managed to overcome the "good movie licenses mean poor games" curse and create a title which, if properly supported by the community, will become a worthy alternative to the titles which are currently been played in iCafe's all over the world.
