Come to think of it, the announcement of yet another Real Time Strategy game set in World War 2 will get us excited as much as a new Sims expansion pack. This is because in these last few years, titles like these have literally flooded an already overcrowded market, and even if some were better than others, they followed the same tried and true recipe, bringing nothing new to the table.
On the other hand, the producers didn’t even try too much to recreate an authentic feel of the battlefield. Too many times have we seen titles in which the gameplay was focused exclusively on the use of tanks. And while their role in winning WW2 is undeniable, the reality is that nothing could have been achieved without the infantry, whether is was in small number or mechanized. Its importance was even greater in urban battles, because in that time tanks weren’t equipped with sophisticated electronic sensors and were literally blind among the ruins of the bombarded cities and also very vulnerable to the enemy’s infantry anti-tank weapons.
Having said those, it comes as no surprise that a producer has finally created a WW2 strategy game which focuses on the most important resource of the war: the common soldier, whether he’s part of a tank crew or is just a simple grunt. Therefore, the loss of a tank in Soldiers of WW2 won’t be such a disaster, since you can always capture one from the enemy, but the loss of one or more grunts will inevitably lead to the Load Game menu. The soldiers are the most versatile weapon at the player’s disposal (as they should be): they can use all the military vehicles in the game, man the anti-tank or artillery batteries and they can also repair these with the aid of a repair kit. As this were not enough, you will also use them to rearm and refuel your tanks, detect land mines as well as creating commando units, which are very powerful.
